October International Supper Club: Nepal

Thank you to everyone for “traveling” with us to explore different countries through their cuisine. Last month, we savored the scrumptious tastes of Germany. Now for October we are heading to Nepal to enjoy their flavorful, comforting traditional dishes.

Nepal holds a very special place in my heart. I lived there for two years with the Peace Corps. I lived in the Western part of the country in the district of Surkhet. I worked with mother’s groups and farmer’s groups to grow and eat the plant, Moringa. But above all I built relationships and had a community of people that cared and loved me. Nepal is a special and magical place. It’s hard not to fall in love with it, and the people of Nepal.

Prior to Peace Corps, I was a picky eater but two years in Nepal changed all of that. I learned to love the different flavors, spices, and unfamiliar vegetables. The traditional dish of Nepal is Dal Bhaat, cooked lentils with rice. It is usually served with cooked seasonal vegetables. It’s a very simple dish but so hearty and flavorful. Most Nepalis follow a vegetarian diet. Another favorite dish is Momos, steamed dumplings filled with vegetables and served with roasted tomato dipping sauce. Again, I’m really excited to share Nepal’s delicious cuisine with the International Supper Club.
