September International Supper Club: Germany
In 2009, I transferred to the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities to complete my undergraduate education. I received my transfer notice very late so I scrambled to find housing. Luckily I found housing in a large apartment complex, where I was randomly paired with 3 other roommates. I was so nervous to be paired with three other random women but this was one of the best things that ever happened. Two of the women have become lifelong friends, and they just so happen to be from Germany and Austria. Since I meet them at such a young, impressionable age, they left a lasting impression and opened up a whole new world for me. Over the years we have been able to meet up and travel together in Italy, Austria, Germany, and Canada. The last time we were all together we went to Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany which actually starts in September. Now 15 years later, we live in different countries divided by oceans. In honor of this 15 year friendship, our International Supper Club will be traveling to Germany for our September meals.
German cuisine is compromised of rich, hearty, comforting dishes that reflect the country’s diverse regions and cultural heritage. German food often features meats like pork, beef, and sausages, paired with potatoes, cabbage, and fresh bread. Classic dishes such as schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerkraut are beloved worldwide, while hearty staples like pretzels, spaetzle, and dumplings offer a satisfying balance of textures and tastes. Whether through the rich gravies, the use of pickling, or the mastery of baking, the flavors of Germany have become an integral part of global culinary traditions.
