February International Supper Club: Brazil

I’ve always wanted to go to Carnival in Brazil; experience the music, costumes, and culture. Carnival is a week-long celebration that takes place before Ash Wednesday and Lent. Carnival is known for its parades, elaborate costumes, and lively music. In Rio, the main parade brings thousands of spectators every year. At this parade, hundreds of samba schools showcase their talents by a panel of judges. Aside from the parade, there’s neighborhood parties and balls for Carnival-goers to dance the night away. I haven’t been able to go to Brazil to celebrate Carnival, so I decided to bring a little piece of Brazil to us through the International Supper Club.

Brazilian food is a vibrant fusion of Indigenous, African, and Portuguese influences, featuring bold flavors and diverse ingredients. Staples include rice, beans, cassava, and tropical fruits, while dishes like feijoada (a rich black bean and pork stew) and moqueca (a coconut-based seafood stew) showcase regional variety. Brazilian barbecue, or churrasco, is famous for its expertly grilled meats, while street foods like pão de queijo (cheesy bread) and acarajé (black-eyed pea fritters) offer delicious snacks. The cuisine is a celebration of Brazil’s rich cultural heritage and abundant natural resources.

I reached out to a friend who is from Brazil to get an idea of what to serve for the International Supper Club. There were so many delicious options to choose from but I opted for the Brazilian Chicken Stroganoff and Churrasco with fresh tomato vinaigrette. Brazilian Chicken Stroganoff is a Brazilian twist on a classic dish! Tender pieces of chicken simmered in a creamy tomato-based sauce with a hint of garlic, onions, and a touch of cream for a velvety finish. Served with fluffy white rice and a side of crispy batata palha (shoestring potatoes) for the perfect balance of flavor and texture. Churrasco features juicy, tender cuts served alongside fluffy white rice and vinagrete, a vibrant tomato and onion salsa that adds the perfect fresh and zesty touch.
